In the thirties, the boldly minimalist Parsons table was a radical retort to the ornate design of a prior age. We’ve taken this modernist icon, changed the design to 2 slabs instead of 4 legs and added textural maximalism by covering it in shagreen and trimming it in warm Belgian grey wood, without sacrificing its utter simplicity. Such a stripped-down form requires absolute perfection in both material and construction; there’s nowhere for the slightest flaw to hide, but this only adds a profound elegance. There’s remarkable functionality in this nesting table—use the smaller pieces as stools, for example, or additional surfaces for a cocktail party. Stingray skin has been treasured since its decorative uses in the earliest days of the Chinese Han dynasty. In the seventeenth century, Europe began importing the exotic skins from Asia; Mme. de Pompadour became a frequent collector of what was soon to be called shagreen. These days, with the species threatened, a new highly sought-after art form has emerged in creating faux shagreen. Our artisans cast resin on a vintage skin and then painstakingly mold it to achieve the exact feel of natural stingray. We showcase the result atop base as striking as the top, made carefully crafted iron. We distressed it in our own patina formulation—after considering thousands of iron swatches—to reveal charcoal undertones. The seams were referencing the pattern of stingray skin application.
