From Bangkok to Atlanta - Christiane's Flea Market Tips

If you've stopped by our new Soho shop, you've probably noticed all the vintage pieces layered in with our own DwellStudio collection. The concept for 77 Wooster centers on our philosophy of decorating the home overtime—thoughtfully adding pieces collected on travels and incorporating heirloom accents passed down from generation to generation. We see the home as an ever evolving narrative—constantly in motion—like life. Which is why we outfitted our store with a well-curated mix of new and vintage finds.

Christiane and our design team are always on the hunt for antique treasures to add to our growing mix of curiosities available at our flagship. Over the years Christiane has become an expert on sussing out flea market finds. So we decided to give you a full breakdown of all her flea market insights—from Bangkok to Atlanta—as told to Condé Nast Traveler.

Bangkok’s Chatuchak Weekend Market

“There’s an antiques section where I have gotten artisan curios."

"Beautifully made inlaid boxes, lacquered cups, and hand-worked brass bowls that are black on the outside, and polished on the inside—at great prices: $25 to $100 for the boxes, and $50 for the bowl.”

Shanghai’s Dongtai Road Market

“This interesting road is filled with all kinds of art and the most beautiful Chinese antique pieces: carved ivory, small cast figurines, little brass objects in interesting shapes.”

<a href="http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm?fx=event&event_id=13000" target">Lille, France’s Braderie de Lille

“Held the first weekend in September each year, this is an amazing flea market that sees almost a million visitors each year."

"I look for crystal chandeliers and French furniture to refurbish. A lot of furniture guys go here to get inspired for new designs.”

Paris’s Porte de Clignancourt and Marché aux Puces de la Porte de Vanves

“Clignancourt has everything—my favorites are the pieces of beautiful European midcentury furniture—and Porte de Vanves is more attic-sale-like, with vintage textiles and bric-a-brac in boxes that you riffle through."

"I bought the two beautiful crystal lights in the shop’s window at Clignancourt. And since these are permanent markets, some of the stalls are just beautiful—so well merchandised.”

Brussels’ Vieux Marche du Grand Sablon

“Brussels is what Paris used to be in terms of pricing. At this market, on Saturdays in the city’s central square, I’ve found silver peacocks and a full set of Rosenthal china with platinum on it that’s so beautiful—and only cost $80. I also love the Sunday morning market in Waterloo, where there are 300 stalls and lots of interesting, small things.”

Massachusetts’ Brimfield Antique Shows

“We just found 11 bird paintings that came out of the aviary of one of the old Steinway mansions at this fair. It’s just so awesome. There’s vintage jewelry, lighting, and various objects, and it’s well organized: it’s easy for the amateur flea marketer to buy something there and ship it home.”

Atlanta’s Scott Antique Market

“I’m always quizzing dealers about where they’re getting good stuff, and this is supposed to be the best flea market in the country now. It’s smaller and less sophisticated than places like Brimfield, which means it’s cheaper: Northeastern flea markets have become much pricier in the past five years.”

From the DwellDossier... SoHo

We’re excited that our very first brick-and-mortar shop is set to open this June on lovely cobblestone-lined Wooster Street. Our new retail home just happens to be nestled in SoHo among a slew of galleries, cafes, fashion outposts and of course the impossibly cool people who inhabit this art-centric neighborhood. To introduce you to our nabe, we’ve drawn up a mini-guide with a few of our favorite places to eat, drink, browse and get inspired. Stay tuned as we update you with more locales we love in the coming weeks! Enjoy!

While you're out and about take some Instagram snaps of your favorite haunts and tag us @DwellStudio. We'd love to see your neighborhood and keep an eye on the Studio blog where we'll feature your best shots!

We’re so lucky to have a wealth of galleries right at our finger tips here in SoHo. Stopping by during coffee breaks is a nice way to refresh the mind during long days in the office.

Peter Blum Soho

99 Wooster Street between Prince and Spring

Showcasing artists like Sol Lewitt (one of the abstract artists we love!) and Louise Bourgeois, the Peter Blum Gallery always has an interesting show primed for graphic inspiration.

Team Gallery

47 Wooster Street between Broome and Grand

If you’re into abstract sculpture, video installation and mixed media presentation, Team Gallery is for you. We’re always impressed with this gallery’s range of madcap offerings, and we love garnering a sense of who’s who in the ever-changing world of up-and-coming avant-garde artists.

Ground Support

399 West Broadway at Spring Street

We’re always on-the-go here at DwellStudio and for those many trips back and forth between the studio on 6th avenue and our flagship store on Wooster, Ground Support has become our coffee standard. The staff always greets us with a smile and a steaming cup of Intelligentsia drip. Plus we think it’s a pretty good sign when you can cull outfit inspiration from your baristas.

Phaidon Store

83 Wooster Street between Broome and Spring Streets

When we need a break from staring at computer screens and falling down the rabbit hole of Pinterest browsing, the Phaidon bookstore provides a welcome escape. The white washed walls and exquisitely produced hardcover art books restore our faith in the potential of print publishing’s staying power.

The Dutch

131 Sullivan Street at Prince

Some days it’s necessary to unwind from a long day with a fancy little martini glass in hand, and The Dutch has become a go-to for many of the DwellStudio designers. With an open and airy interior, grand French windows and beautifully styled food presentations, we feel right at home here.

Outfitting the Kids' Room

Some of my top tips for keeping the kid’s room feeling fresh and on-trend were recently featured in The New York Observer’s parenting magazine Scooter. Here’s a roundup of my advice from the article.

European Minimalism:

Nurseries with clean lines and tones of white and grays accented with dusty colors are great for rooms that babies can grow into.

Bold Colors:

An easy way to create this graphic modern trend is with decals in bright colors on walls, shelves with cutout circles and a mirror.

The Ceiling:

There is so much you can do with the ceiling to add interest. Why not add a stripe or use wall paper?
