How You Dwell - Victoria of SF Girl by Bay

Long time DwellStudio friend Victoria of the awesome design blog SF Girl by Bay recently redecorated her modern cottage. This time she went in a cool minimalist direction with shots of crisp black and white pairings throughout. We've always loved Victoria's style - especially when she boldly painted her bedroom black. When Victoria revealed her redo on her blog, we were extra excited to see how she styled our gorgeous Chester sofa in leather. We love how she offset the masculine side of our Chester sofa with a plush white throw, sweet graphic pillows and by placing a charming photograph of garden roses above the sofa. We adore the balance of modern and retro with masculine and feminine touches throughout Victoria's home!

How You Dwell - A Dark and Moody Bedroom

We love how decorator Belinda Mitchell used our signature fabrics to add elegant designer details to this young couple's chic bedroom. The mix of smoky hues, rich velvety textures and deep navy blues feels so romantic and intimate, don't you think? The boudoir chair is customized with our super soft Gate fabric in charcoal. On the bed the designer paired our Vintage Blossom pillows with custom designed Gate pillows. Plus we adore the quirky twist on that porcelain horse lamp with our Vintage Blossom fabric on the lamp shade. This bedroom is a beautiful example of mixing and matching classic design elements with modern twists!

Barnett Side Table featured in Elle Decor

Our handsome and versatile Barnett Side Table was featured in this month's issue of Elle Decor! Interior designers Marie Turner Carson and Shawn Henderson edited a list of their ten favorite bedside tables. Here's what two designers said about Barnett: "Goatskin is so chic," says Carson of the parchment paneling on this French Oak—veneered table. The door, marked with a brass pull, opens to reveal an interior shelf. I love the hexagonal design—it's unique and practical," she adds. The luxe materials remind Henderson of high French style, "along the lines of Jean-Michel Frank." He'd showcase a gorgeous object on top, "like a carved alabaster lamp."

Inspired by... Josef Albers

This season our design team looked to the innovative designs of artist Josef Albers. His clean geometric compositions and color theories were central elements of the Bauhaus design movement. Our team was especially inspired by Albers' Homage to the Square series and his graphic posters from the 1950s and 60s.

Don't you love all the bold colors and graphic lines of Albers' work? We pulled these images straight from our design team's inspiration files!

Inspired by... Martin + Osa

Have we mentioned our obsession with explorers Martin and Osa Johnson? Well, if you didn't already know, our design team loves the trailblazing spirit of this safari duo! So this season we redesigned the zebra stripe for our new Osa Pillows (named for the explorers!). Our riff on this design classic is bold, geometric and daring. We think this graphic pillow (available in mustard and charcoal) is the perfect way to dress up the sofa. What do you think?

Mini-Design Moguls

Last week I had the pleasure of leading a workshop at one of my favorite places in the city—The Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Working with kids on design projects is always fascinating and fun. All the kids I met were so talented and bright. During my workshop, I explained the process of turning inspirations into patterns for textiles—just like we do here at DwellStudio. I walked the group through my concepting process for our Skyline pattern, which was inspired by the sweeping city views from our Studio. Next, I had the kids hit the craft tables to develop their own prints based on their inspirations. At the end, I held mock design reviews with each of the kids to give them a chance to present their ideas and to encourage them to think about how they would translate their patterns into pillows, rugs and duvet sets. It was very cool to hear all their ideas! Spending time with this bunch of pint-sized Picassos was so refreshing! Here are a few snaps from the afternoon…

More than Child’s Play

We trekked uptown to visit MoMA’s new show: Century of the Child: Growing by Design (1900-2000). It’s a very interesting exploration of how all design—from architecture to toys—affects a child’s development (something we think about a lot in the Studio).

We were particularly drawn to the galleries filled with hundreds of historic toys—from the super iconic to the whacky.

The inspiration behind the show comes from Swedish-based author Ellen Key’s book “The Century of the Child.” Her writings explore the changes that took place throughout the course of the 20th century—when children became the center of designers’ work.

The exhibition is very kid-friendly with lots of interactive displays and opportunities for play. As apart of the show (open till November 5th) MoMA will play host to several design workshops–There’s even one helmed by DwellStudio friend and Learning Materials designer Karen Hewitt. We highly recommend checking out the exhibit with the brood in tow!

An American Tale – DwellDialogue with… Woody

From artwork designed by LA-based artists to lighting crafted in downtown Brooklyn, we love supporting the ethos of Made in the USA! One of our favorite stateside narratives is our partnership with Precedent. This homegrown company handcrafts our entire collection of upholstered furniture in the mountains of North Carolina (we're in the Tar Heel state a lot). To get the inside scoop on this born and bred company, we went straight to the source—Meet Woody Williams, President of Precedent.

Tell us about your relationship with DwellStudio.

Working with DwellStudio has been absolutely amazing. It has truly been a collaborative effort that combines DwellStudio’s design talents with Precedent's ability to execute those designs in a way that makes the product incredibly comfortable and a great value.

What’s the story behind Precedent’s commitment to American-made?

We are fortunate to have an experienced group of craftsmen who are passionate about quality. We build our products right here in North Carolina. The dedication to quality just cannot be replicated in another country. We feel an obligation to our workforce to keep jobs at home. Perhaps we could save money by sending our production offshore, but it would never be worth the sacrifice in quality.

Where do you source materials?

We source all of our wood products domestically, most coming from within 300 miles of our manufacturing facility. To the extent possible, we source fabrics from domestic sources as well. We find the quality and reliability of stateside textiles superior.

What are some of your favorite pieces in the DwellStudio line and why?

My favorite is the Hans Chaise, which we just introduced at the spring High Point Market. If you like the Hans Chair, you're going to love the chaise!

From the sofas in the collection, Larkin is my favorite. I love the clean lines, and it so comfortable. From the wood collection, the Gate Armoire is very elegant and very chic!

What's black and white and chic allover? MStetson's lovely dwelling, of course! We've had our eye on this stylish design blogger's site for a while.
