We're HUGE fans of Lonny Magazine (aren't you?). So imagine our excitement when they called us up asking a tour of our newly opened flagship store in New York City? (We were thrilled, of course!) We adore the article—it's beautifully written—and the images capture our 77 Wooster boutique in a stunning light. We were particularly drawn to the galleries filled with hundreds of historic toys—from the super iconic to the whacky.

The inspiration behind the show comes from Swedish-based author Ellen Key’s book “The Century of the Child.” Her writings explore the changes that took place throughout the course of the 20th century—when children became the center of designers’ work.

The exhibition is very kid-friendly with lots of interactive displays and opportunities for play. As apart of the show (open till November 5th) MoMA will play host to several design workshops–There’s even one helmed by DwellStudio friend and Learning Materials designer Karen Hewitt. We highly recommend checking out the exhibit with the brood in tow!

Its black façade may appear intimidating at first sight, but muster up the courage to venture inside and you’ll find madcap designs from the art studio Convoluted Construct.

We spoke with the Convoluted Construct artists (that’s a mouthful) to find out more about the inspiration behind this project: “Our idea for the traveling gallery comes from the constant search for gallery space in NYC. If you can’t find it, why not create it?”

The artwork combines dream-like landscapes, graphic illustrations and brushes of color that create a fantastical world reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. Many of the paintings are silk-screened onto T-shirts, blurring the line between fashion and art.

We're totally on-board with the communal and start-up spirit of this cool summer project.

I love supporting CMOM and their commitment to engaging little ones through arts education. I'm always interested in helping in any way I can, so when the curators at CMOM asked me to be a part of this new exhibition, I jumped at the opportunity. It’s so important to instill a passion for discovery in children from a young age.

The space is primed for creative collaboration with large worktables, engaging projects and lots of room for learning and problem solving through design. Along one of the walls is a project board outlining our design process here at DwellStudio based around our Skyline pattern. Little ones can see all the steps of our process from selecting Pantone colors, sketching patterns to producing pillows and bedding based on the print.

Plus, on August 1st at 2pm, I'll lead a workshop as a part of CMOM's Meet the Designer series. During my workshop we'll talk about the process of transforming our inspirations into prints and textiles—just like we do at DwellStudio. I’m so honored and humbled to be included in this series along with other amazing design-savvy women like hat designer Lola Ehrlich, Grensler architect Belinda Watts and theater set designer Rachel Hauck. I love working with kids and helping them to discover new ways of viewing the world around them (and learning from them!). If you’re in the city this summer drop by the Design Studio with your little ones. Who knows, this exhibit may just inspire the next wave of innovative designers.

Your second Cookies for Kids' Cancer cookbook is due out next spring; how did you develop the concept?

I didn't exactly follow the typical path. A dear friend, Sally Sampson, who donated the recipes for the first baking event kept saying that we should do a cookbook to spread the word even further about Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. We were very fortunate to meet with an amazing editor at John Wiley & Sons who also saw the vision and together we decided we had the makings for a compelling cookbook. But, we didn’t just want to have a typical cookbook.

To us, the recipe for a successful book included both the tangible assets – the recipes – but also the intangible assets which were the stories of people who have held their own events and tips on how to host a successful event. The book, The Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Best Bake Sale Cookbook, has more than 65 foolproof recipes perfect for bake sales and dozens of profiles of bake sale hosts from across the country.  One thing to mention about the book, which at $19.99 is a great deal, all author profits go directly to pediatric cancer research.

Holding a bake sale conjures a lot of nostalgia for childhood and helps to create a sense of community. Can you expand on how you came up with the bake sale concept?

After the first mega bake-a-thon and long after we stopped selling cookies, people kept getting in touch with us asking us how they could involved in their community. They heard what we were doing. They were inspired. They wanted to see the magic continue. Hosting a Cookies for Kids’ Cancer bake sale seemed to us to be the perfect way for people to get involved  in their community whether they baked a few cookies and had a bake sale at work or baked a few thousand cookies and hold a large-scale event. To us, it didn’t matter what people did…we just wanted them to be "Good Cookies".

Any sweet moments from past bake sales?

One of the things we find so surprising is how people always thank US for the opportunity to get involved. It completely blows me away…even after thousands of events. Here are people who have decided to get involved and make a difference in the lives of children and they are thanking us?! How can that be? But there’s something magical that happens when people are Good Cookies.

How can people set up a bake sale in their area?

Visit the Cookies for Kids' Cancer website. From there, you can read about tips for success, see pictures of other events, order a bake sale kit filled with all the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer branded items you need to help raise awareness and funds, and of course, register your event.

Tell us how Cookies for Kids’ Cancer started?

In early 2007, my incredibly sweet son Liam was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. What came as a total surprise to me, almost as much as his cancer diagnosis, was finding out that cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. Number one. Who knew? I certainly didn’t. One of the things Liam’s oncologist said to me is that the reason people don’t know this fact is because kids with cancer don’t make headlines the way adults do. He dejectedly told me that no one cares about a kid who is diagnosed with cancer.

I’ll never forget that day. And I made a promise to myself that after Liam* was out of the danger zone, I would see what I could do to help shed some light on the needs surrounding pediatric cancer.

Eight grueling months later, Liam was cancer free and my husband and I felt incredibly blessed to see our son thriving and back in school. It was October. The holidays were coming up. I knew that people would soon be searching for the perfect holiday gift – one that not only felt good to give but that the recipient felt good about receiving. But what? What could I do? A car wash in cold winter months didn’t seem like a good idea, so I thought about things that people like to do around the holidays and came up with baking. I loved to bake. It was one of the things I cherished doing for friends and family during the holidays. But more importantly, I knew a lot of people who also loved to bake. So as I sat on the steps of Liam’s preschool, I decided I would bake holiday cookies, put them in pretty packaging and sell them during the holidays as a pediatric cancer research fundraiser.

We had just rescued Liam from the grips of cancer, so how hard could it be to bake some cookies? The short version of the answer is that it was a LOT harder than I thought with so many challenges and moving pieces and parts. But with the help of more than 250 determined volunteers, many of whom I didn’t know, but who heard about the project, we did it. In nine days we sold out of all 96,000 cookies and after 18 consecutive days of baking, packaging and shipping, raised more than $420,000 which helped to fund a pediatric cancer therapy that became available in 2011.

After the ovens cooled from the incredibly odyssey of the massive bake-a-thon, my husband and I realized we had hit a chord with people. We found a way to get people involved in pediatric cancer in a way that wasn’t scary. After months of planning, we launched Cookies for Kids’ Cancer as a year-round organization in September 2008, Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Since then more than 4,000 events across the country from bake sales to bowl-a-thons have been registered and millions of dollars have been raised and granted to the leading pediatric cancer research facilities around the country. Today we also sell cookies year round and just like the first massive bake-a-thon in 2007, 100% of the profit of our cookies goes to supporting pediatric cancer research.

*Note: On January 24th 2011, Liam Witt lost his battle with cancer. He was six years, eight months and nine days old. His memorial service was attended by more than 800 people including 120 New York City firefighters who honored Liam as a member of the New York City fire department. The little boy who lived life to the fullest by loving with no reservations, continues to inspire his family and friends who live life following the last three words his mother spoke during his eulogy: Love Like Liam.

I am extra excited about this year’s event because many of New York’s top chef and pastry chefs are donating their edible wares, including Momofuko Milk Bar, Locanda Verda, Eleven Madison Park, NoMad, ABC Kitchen, Gramercy Tavern, Landmarc, Minetta Tavern and Union Square Café. It’s sure to be a delectable afternoon spent raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer. I also love the Sunday morning market in Waterloo, where there are 300 stalls and lots of interesting, small things.”

“We just found 11 bird paintings that came out of the aviary of one of the old Steinway mansions at this fair. It’s just so awesome. There’s vintage jewelry, lighting, and various objects, and it’s well organized: it’s easy for the amateur flea marketer to buy something there and ship it home.”

Atlanta’s Scott Antique Market

“I’m always quizzing dealers about where they’re getting good stuff, and this is supposed to be the best flea market in the country now. It’s smaller and less sophisticated than places like Brimfield, which means it’s cheaper: Northeastern flea markets have become much pricier in the past five years.”

Q: What’s your 9-to-5 job?

A: President at DwellStudio.

A: Toronto, Canada.

A: Soho, NYC.

Q: Where are your favorite places to go with your kids in your neighborhood?

A:  My kids are born and raised in Soho, so they have grown up walking and scootering the neighborhood with no shortage of anything inspiring or interesting to see. Thompson Park and Washington Square are longtime favorites which is a pretty cool way to grow up.

We also love to eat out, my kids cannot get enough of the pizza at Savore or Pulino’s, and late night jaunts to Emack & Bolios for ice cream in their jammies.

Early morning breakfast at Silver Spurs and winter book hunting at Scholastic. Although now that we have opened a store around the corner, I think that is their new favorite place.

Q: Describe your everyday style.

A: Casual and tailored; and usually something purple/lavender. For some reason I can’t seem to get away from that color in my wardrobe.

Q: What is your favorite part about your home?

A: I lived and breathed every single part of the design and construction, so it feels very personal and comfortable. We designed it as a real family home; an oasis from a busy urban life where we can entertain but not so formal that we don’t mind if the kids zoom around on their scooters.

Q: How do you balance your work, personal and family lives?

A: Still working on it! I make a point of always having breakfast with my kids and taking them to school, then we try and sit down for dinner altogether at the end of each day. It makes a world of difference. In between and after, I get whatever I need to do, done.

A: My son is currently really into basketball, so we go to the courts on Worth Street; he can play and skateboard there. New Museum is close to our house, and we make a Sunday morning pilgrimage to Russ & Daughters for the best smoked fish.

Schiaparelli's opulent designs focus on the shoulders. She exaggerated proporiton with wildly sculptural capes, fantastical feathers and delectable hats and shoes.

Working in 1920s Paris, Schiaparelli played to the Cafe Society's mannerisms—women were usally seen only from the waist up, sitting at a restaurant table. Thus she felt it was redundant to create intricate skirts, so instead she focused on producing dramatic silhouettes from the waist up.

Conversely the exhibition highlights Prada's penchant for baroque, waist down designs—skirts printed with extravagant and sometimes outrageous patterns and crafted in rich materials. Prada honed in on the idea of ugly-chic—making a statement of utilitarian sophistication.

Meandering through the gallery leaves you in a fashion daze, haute fashion—usually seen strutting runways, or online—comes to life as you stand just inches away from the opulent designs. The entire show is set to a soundtrack of Prada in dialouge with a reincarnated Schiaparellli (portaratyed by Australian actress Judy Davis).

Their bold conversations about about fashion, art, femnisim and design provide the perfect backdrop. It's a surreal and magical treat to both see and hear the narratives of these two legendary mavens. We're calling this show a must-see for summer. Schiaparelli & Prada: Impossible Conversations is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York until August 19—so check it out and let us know what you think!

How do you balance your work, personal and family lives?

It's tough sometimes, but never boring. It begins early, and there isn't much sitting around. But I love it, and it keeps me creative and on my toes. I also have an incredible nanny, and a wonderful husband!

Tompkins Square Park, the soccer field across from my studio.

Describe your everyday style.

I like to have a balance to my look and for it to be not overly complicated, so not many patterns or frilly things. I like a little boy-meets-girl. Some punky tough-ness mixed with a little boho sometimes, or just something that can cut and balance. High meets low, always clean and modern. Plus layering on some jewelry from my friend’s line Made Her Think is an easy way feel edgy and chic.

What is your favorite part about your home?

I love my home. I'd first have to say my family is my favorite thing about my home, and that it feels like a home to us. But James (my husband) and I had a very good time decorating it. We took our time and collected things along the way. We did it together, it was very collaborative and creative.

What’s the most important part of designing a nursery?

I want it to be stimulating for the baby, and fun, colorful and textural. But not to feel super baby, but to have a good mix of things that make it designed well and balanced like a beautiful room that the whole family will want to be in.

Who is your cool style mom icon?

Jane Birkin.

What is the one thing DwellStudio and HATCH makes that you give to all your friends?

The Animal Heads from DwellStudio—whether you have super clean, modern, or more eclectic style these are such a great accent in any room. My go-to from HATCH is The Slouch Dress or The Jumper. They are both so easy and so well designed, whether you are pregs or not, you look fantastic and put together as soon as you put them on!

Top 3 things always in your handbag?

Phone, Wallet, keys. Not very exciting…Maybe some pins for my hair.

Hardest part about being a working mom?

Time or lack of it. And not too much for yourself...

Best advice you’ve received on parenting?

Stay calm, it will pass. And teach your child nice manners.

Favorite kids book?

I LOVE Herve Tullet's Press Here book. It is really fun and creative. The little ones love it.

How about your kid’s favorite book?

We are loving Dr.Seuss right now. And Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site.

What beauty product can you not live without?

I love Astara facial products. I've used them for years now.

As a part of our Style/Squared contest on Pinterest, we're celebrating stylish moms this week on the Studio blog. First up is an interview with Chrisy Turlington Burns. Of course many of you know her as part of fashion's elite, but she's now using her celebrity to raise awareness for maternal health issues around the world through her charity Every Mother Counts.

On a rainy morning in New York last week Hatch Collection Designer Ariane Goldman and DwellStudio Founder Christiane Lemieux caught up with Christy over coffee at Starbucks. The three stylish moms had a great conversation about balancing motherhood, charity and personal style! Check it out...

Q: Give us the background story on what inspired you to start Every Mother Counts.

A: I experienced a complication after delivering my daughter eight years ago that I later learned could have been life threatening, especially if I had not been where I was when I delivered and perhaps even more important, in the hands of a qualified team that included a doula, nurses, midwife and ultimately an OB. This experience got me thinking about other women and the challenges that so many of them face that contribute to hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths around the world every year. I wanted to share what I learned and I thought that a documentary film would be the best way to connect women through the shared experience of childbirth. I started filming No Woman, No Cry in 2008 and premiered it in 2010 at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film tells the personal stories of pregnant women and their caregivers in four countries. Once I completed the documentary I decided to launch Every Mother Counts so that audiences could learn more about the challenges and solutions and get involved in a meaningful way.

Q: We in the US are lucky to indulge and celebrate Mother’s Day while the mothers that Every Mother Counts advocates for are concerned with basic health needs. Can you elaborate on how this plays into your work with your charity?

A: Mother’s Day is only really celebrated in a few countries and while most of us, in the west, mothers and children alike, participate in some way or another many of us do so without reflection or connection to mothers outside of our circles. We wanted to honor mothers around the world in a different way this year so with the help of a wonderful creative agency called CHI & Partners we came up with the idea of No Mothers Day. No Mothers Day is a powerful social issue campaign designed to raise awareness about the hundreds of thousands of girls and women around the world who die each year from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth.

Q: Your wonderful film, No Woman, No Cry, puts a spotlight on the quest to improve maternal health all over the world. Could you describe the experience of making the film—where did you travel? Any anecdotes?

A: I learned so much through the process of making No Woman, No Cry and continue to learn as I travel around the world with this film. What still moves me every time I view it is the sheer strength and grace that each of the women possessed in the most trying of circumstances. I could never work as hard or as selflessly as these women and countless others do every day. I have remained connected with almost everyone we filmed with and have returned to Tanzania, Bangladesh and Guatemala to share the finished product with them. There were of course other stories we filmed that did not make it into the final cut but I share those stories as well whenever I can.

Q: How has becoming a mother shaped your philosophy/approach to life?

A: Becoming a mother totally redirected my life. I knew that it would change me, and I welcomed that change but how it would was a complete surprise. I truly believe that the experience has empowered me and that the connection I have with every mother now is like a sisterhood.

Q: How do you remain authentic to yourself while juggling work, personal and family life?

A: The juggling is what allows me to do all that I want to do. I choose it and realizing that allows me to take responsibility for all that I attempt to do. When I take on too much, it’s up to me to make some sacrifices and I have learned with practice that letting go can be very liberating.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part of working on your charity?

A: Interacting with women around the world and working with others committed to empowering girls and women.

Q: Describe your everyday style?

A: After years of being around the fashion industry I am somewhat immune to it. My lifestyle sort of dictates what I wear. I am a practical person and don’t like to spend a lot of time on myself, but I do appreciate good design. I am a fan of the French designer Isabel Marant and feel that I can pretty much find all I need in her shops these days.

Q: What is your favorite part about your home?

A: Our home is very light and open. Even in the winter we get lots of daylight and that makes me happy. The kitchen is sort of central and even though I don’t cook as much as I’d like to say I do, the room is very inviting.

Q: What do you really want for Mother’s Day?

A: A day of rest and maybe a yoga class.

Q: Favorite family meal?

A: We are big on smoothies in our family. My son can consume almost any food if it tastes sweet so we throw veggies in with fruit. The kids also love to make the smoothies and have Eddie and I try their concoctions. They are getting better.

Q: Favorite Kids book? How about your kid’s favorite book?

A: I love Ferdinand the Bull. My son often enjoys The City Kid and The Suburb Kid these days and Grace is starting to enjoy Nancy Drew.

Q: What have you learned from your kids?

A: They are my greatest teachers. I would say that their best daily lesson is patience, which they are testing in me every day in one way or another.

The world lost a true visionary yesterday.  Steven Jobs was one of those rare people who truly changed the way we all live. In some ways, we may not be able to grasp the extent of his legacy for generations to come, but what is real to me is how his work has shaped the growth of my company.

I began this company with a Mac desk top. I remember tracing the repeat for the Circles pattern on the window of my living room, then scanning the file into the desk top!  

From those humble beginnings, Mac products have been prevalent at every milestone of the company's growth.  There was always some new product that we coveted and were so proud we could invest in - the clamshell laptop, the iMac, the iPhone and now the iPad, which has proven to be an amazing tool for everyone - from desiger to salesperson to receptionist.

It's a beautiful morning here in lovely old Halifax, on Canada's east coast where we've come to visit our daughter for the weekend. Its a holiday here - today is Canada Day. Never heard of it? Well that's the first thing about being Canadian - we aren't bothered by that. We like our celebrations, just like our country, flying under the radar a little bit, like a really good secret, rather than march them out to the world's attention with a big brass band. Today the Queen (that would be our Monarch, the British Queen Elizabeth II) is in Ottawa inspecting the tulips (there are many - the Dutch just kept on sending them to us after the War), tonight a crowd will assemble for a free concert on Parliament hill that gets broadcast on the CBC, our national broadcast network, and in between we won't be doing a hell of a lot rather than making sure we've got enough BBQ briquettes, stopping in at Tim's for a coffee and a cruller, and reading the paper on the dock, maybe going for a swim.

One of the best things about being Canadian is that Canadians are funny. Wedged as we are between Europe and America we have some ironic distance from both. Did you know Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Lorne Michaels and Dan Akroyd are Canadian? Yup. We are funny.

Linda Evangelista

And cute too! Gorgeously multi-cultural (we take our global fusion seriously here, I mean it's a government policy), our professional lovelies include Yasmina Warshame, Shalom Harlowe and the superest supermodel of them all, Linda Evangelista. Did you know, we have diamonds too? Yes, really gorgeous white pure ones, from the far north and they don't have anything to do with fueling military military regimes and financing civil war.

The other thing we have going for us is this land. Space, air, trees, rivers, beaches, mountains, you name it - we got it and it infuses everything about the way we live here, from the good (best skiing in the world at Whistler, most amazing cottage country and culture) to the not so good (we don't think twice about driving our cars and expanding our enormous carbon footprint).

Pierre Elliott Trudeau

The most stylish Canadian moments, I would have to say, would have to be the era of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, himself the most swish leader the world has seen in many decades with his rose in his lapel, his vintage Mercedes cabriolet, dressed in full buckskin for a canoe trip down the Nahanni, or dancing in a 70's tux with his hippie bride Margaret at Studio 54. And then he had the 'tude-flipping the press a "fuddle duddle," smokin a cigar with Castro, dancing a pirouette behind the Queen. This guy was an intellectual, a savvy politician and a sexy man of his age with style to burn.

Neil Young

Neil Young is another great key to good Canadian style - raw, personal, deeply honest, solitary, non-pompous to the extreme, his personal style statement of flannel shirts and denim, construction boots and unkempt hair got called "grunge" later when it was mimiced by Kurt Cobain and then put on the fashion runway by Marc Jacobs. But we know it's ours, just like all singer songwriters with a guitar these days singing with their quirky imitations of Neil and Joni Mitchell. They are just trying to sound and look Canadian. You can't fool us, but we won't bother to correct you, because its really not polite.

Montreal

Our cities too are incredibly stylish-sorry but Montreal is one of those magical places that lives in the imagination, sexy, sophisticated small, and totally cosmopolitan. And St John's Newfoundland? That place rocks out entirely to its own drummer.

Ultimately, the best thing about being Canadian is a shared sense that people are so greatful to have left whatever hellhole of war and struggle and privation behind them and come to this land of lakes and space and endless peaceful possibility for themselves and their children that the overwhelming sense one gets on the street here particularly in a multicultural city like Toronto, where we live, is one of deep gratitude that such a place exists here on earth.

And what do we have on our flag? No predatory animals or military stripes. We have a leaf, a maple leaf to be precise, that has wafted down off a giant tree and is swaying in the breeze, hopefully to the sounds of really great new Canadian music, Feist, Sam Roberts or Arcade fire.

We have made a very quiet Canadian promise to each other here, that if we are tolerant and respectful of one another, maybe the rest of the globe will take a lesson from us and start doing it too and the world will become a better happier safer and more humane place.

And I can't imagine any other, better promise.

Today we're giving a simple palette of yellow, grey and white a graphic, modern twist by pumping up the patterns. Pairing it all with our Ornate headboard (customized with Vintage Blossom Dove fabric) adds a touch of whimsy to the bed.

It would seem that my new book Undecorate has generated some buzz and controversy.  I wrote the book in response to a sweeping trend I see.... The openness of the internet and social media, the landslide of information, the advent of the style blog by professional and non-professionals alike  - all resulting in people designing for themselves the rise of great personal style.  Design has stopped being a start and finish process – we are looking at each other and learning and tweaking our spaces, our wardrobes our personal style all the time...hence Undecorate. I love a good debate.

We have watched in horror with the rest of the world as this disaster has unfolded in Japan, wondering what we could do to help. What’s needed most right now is cash fund relief and after looking carefully at charities helping the relief efforts we decided to give to UNICEF.  They are focusing their aid on children affected by the tragedy, something we support very strongly. So, from 6PM tonight through 6PM Friday we are donating 20% of our sales to UNICEF. Our thoughts are with the people of Japan.

It’s that time of year again....our annual pilgrimage to the tree lot in front of the office (sohotrees.com). The New York Christmas tree experience is always funny to me. It could not be further from chopping one down yourself. In fact - this year the kiddies got there by scooter. So much for my snowy childhood Christmas but our 6 foot Canadian Balsam is perfect!

I'm so excited for this Saturday at CMOM (Children's Museum of Manhattan) - I'll be there in the afternoon, leading a really fun art/healthy sleep habits project with the incredible team there.  We're going to be talking about what kids love about their bedrooms and beds and decorating pillow cases with our (unreleased, shh!) stamp sets and markers for the kids to take home.  They also take home this adorable sleep journal:

The entire day is devoted to healthy sleep habits for kids (a topic I am EXTREMELY passionate about!) - and there's tons of great activities all day long, but my part is at 3pm and 4pm with a sign-up art session with moi. "Dol is a Korean tradition that celebrates the birthday of a one-year-old baby. This ceremony blesses the child with a prosperous future and has taken on great significance in Korea. The birthday babies wear a hanbok and a traditional hat. Part of the Dol is a ritual where the child is placed in front of objects such as string, money and pencils. The child is then urged to pick up an object. It is believed the one selected will foretell the child's future (string=long life, money=wealth, pencil=scholar). The Dol table has food stacked high to symbolize a life of prosperity for the baby."

As most of you know, we are animal lovers here at DwellStudio, so I am very excited to spread the word about the world’s largest gathering of dogs and cats this weekend. The American Kennel Club and Cat Fancier’s Association are having a “Meet the Breeds” event on October 16 & 17 at the Javits Center.

Here are the top 3 reasons why you should trek your way to far west side of Manhattan this weekend

1. CAT IDOL: The judges will have their say, but it is the viewing public that determines who will become New York's favorite feline. Don't miss finding out who is crowned this year's Cat Idol, the winner will be revealed during a live presentation in the stage area at 4 p.m. on SUNDAY.

2. FELINE AGILITY: Acts of canine and feline Olympics in an off Olympic year, who knew? Last year Whoopi Goldberg came to Meet the Breeds to see cats race against the clock. Whoopi herself even ran a cat thru the obstacle course consisting of stairs, hoops, and tunnels.

3. Play with over 1,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Need I say more?

I love fashion week for a glimpse of what is coming in all areas of design. Looking at the New York shows - I would argue that Rodarte’s Spring 2011 was the most and original offering in fashion last week. This show was bold, beautifully designed and totally inspiring.  It is no secret that we love pattern, texture and the mix here at DwellStudio.  The Mulleavy girls took the mix to new heights.  

Check out this gorgeous mix of a fresh white ground botanical mixed with a more traditional Japanese inspired geometric and finished with an earthy stripe. I see this mix of texutres and culture happening in home interiors lately as well. Gorgeous, rich and decidedly modern.

I also love how the designers layered in oversized men’s wear references in a new way. The heringbone is gorgeous and we are seeing it everywhere on floors, artwork and in textiles.  Mixed with a botanical pattern, it's becomes incredibly hip.

I think this is an excellent addition to their more ethereal looks and creates just the right amount of artistic tension. I will absolutely be inspired by this mix – not to mention the very interior friendly palette of warm neutrals with pops of fresh blue and white.

We're always informed by fashion when developing our collections for the coming seasons - you will definitely see cues from this and other shows coming off the runways. But this season I'm happy to see fashion and home decor existing side-by-side: ecclectic and modern with a nod to the past and ultimately, a little mixed-up.

Last Thursday we all rendezvoused a few blocks over from our studio at the Michele Varian shop on Crosby Street. The event? We were celebrating our friend Joy's book launch for Creative, Inc.  She co-authored the book with the lovely Meg Mateo Ilasco. 

Of course, we bought the book and had the girlies sign them for you guys - and we're giving one away to our blog readers.

I spent some time with this book over the weekend (ok, I read it cover to cover - is it ok to give away a "lightly read" book?) - guys, this book is spot on and a must-read for anyone considering either freelancing or opening their own business in any creative industry.  Joy and Meg spell out everything it takes to launch and run a successful design business...from whether you are a good candidate as business owner/freelancer to the permits you need for various business structures to how to negotiate fees all the way down to literally giving you a sample invoice.  I'd argue that even if you're NOT considering going out on your own, it's a really useful read for general understanding of how the creative industry works.

It's called the Ultimate Block Party - basically, it's a big day-long event taking place on Sunday, October 3rd in Central Park for kids. The whole idea is to celebrate the convergence of art + science in learning and play.  There's a ton of information on their website but the basic 411 is listed below.

We're definitely all taking our kiddies (hello, it's free!) to see our friends at CMOM, who are creating a huge sculpture of an interactive brain that the kids get to paint, collage and draw on!  Ok, and also maybe we're hoping to see what SJP (the event spokesperson) will wear.

I will fill you all in on a little secret here at DwellStudio HQ: I am actually Christiane's boss. Let me give you a little insight into what I've demanded of Ms. Lemieux in the last week:  I've sent her on no less than 10 flights in the last 7 days, touching down in no less than 3 US states and 5 European cities.  And do I give her a rest tomorow as she is getting ready to board her flight from London to NYC at this very moment? 

No.  And this is the reason for this post...if you're in NYC tomorrow and are a business owner - go online and register for this summit being put on by the NY Times and American Express, hop yourself a cab to the Hilton on West 53rd, and meet with Christiane, along with several other successful entrepeneurs as they discuss how small businesses thrive in any economic climate. Christiane will be on a panel focused on Marketing/Building a Brand, but it's a full day devoted to helping business owners learn what it takes to succeed. Alongside Christiane are people like Cynthia Rowley, Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's, yum!), Sukhinder Singh Cassidy (founder of Polyvore), and many many more.  Should be really interesting.  You can learn more about it here. While I'm not going to spoil the book for you since it's not out until early next year,  I will tell that last summer I had the unbelieveable fortune to get to travel all over this amazing country to document 22 of the most ecclectic, beautiful, crazy and above all authentic homes I have seen.  The philosphy of the book is that to me the most truly inspiring homes are the result of the home-owner themselves designing and organically creating their own interior worlds - sometimes over years. This book is an ode to personal style.  It's about how interiors reflect each home owner's personality, character, humor and wit. With the internet as the new destination for a glimpse into each others spaces - I am sure you will agree that there are some amazingly original and creative interiors out there. Undecorate celebrates these authentic interiors.

I STILL can't get past how beautiful these paintings by Carly Waito are. 

They are currently on exhibition in Toronto at Narwhal in a show called The Cabinet of Wonder.  Definitely check it out if you can - her pieces are very moving. I've been a long-time fan of hers...I was lucky to see her installation of porcelain jellyfish in Toronto back in 2008 as part of the duo Coe & Waito.

This was part of a exhibition called Come Up to My Room in a very cool Toronto hotel (sorry forgeting the name!) - these jellyfish were suspended all over the room.  It was so beautiful - Coe & Waito really captured the weighlessnes of jellyfish perfectly.  I'd STILL like to buy one from them - you hear that Carly!?

We love these napkins!  I use them to add a little texture at my dinner parties and am constantly praised for the added luxury and style of patterned-linen napkins.

The people over at T and I are often on the same page.  They posted a great behind the scenes look into the studio of one of my favorite artists Pae White. I love getting a glimpse into the spaces of the people I admire – I especially love to look at what they have on their walls.

The newest online shelter publication has finally been revealed, after much build-up (seriously, ladies) and it ROCKS! It’s called Rue and you should be clicking your way through it immediately if you have not already.

I think you all know we have a slight affinity for Victoria...and seeing our classic Chinoiserie in her bedroom makes us all smile big-time.

We also thought the Ban.Do party shoot and video was adorable. Nice work Rue – can’t wait to see the next issue!

We love getting emails from people showing us how they transform our patterns into their own creative ideas. Chris threw a baby shower for his friend Ashleigh and had a cake made inspired by our Gio Lemon pattern.

I decided to use that as the inspiration for her baby shower as well. I've recently been couting the reasons why I love raising our son in New York City...and after a long weekend spent in the 212 and 718 area codes, I can definitely add Victorian Gardens in Central Park to that list...

I could tell by the look in his eyes that Lucas felt like he'd been transported to a wonderland...and all right there in Central Park for an afternoon of jumping frogs, flying helicopters, swinging boats and tooting trains.  A toddler's dream come true.  So thank you, Victorian Gardens, for being my steadfast go-to for an amazing afternoon with my kiddo.

We know this is not breaking news, but Arcade Fire's online multi-media video/experience (thingy) is so beautiful and cool.  If you hadn't had a chance - check it out for yourself. You won't be dissapointed.

I'm walking down 23rd Street in Chelsea and suddenly I find myself transported to another era.  A quick converstaion with a large man with a walkie-talkie informs me that they are filming a movie set in 1971 at the Chelsea Hotel.

If you're unfamiliar with this legendary hotel, residence, hang-out for artists from all generations, bar, you-name-it - I loved this film's interpretation of the various characters that have graced it's walls. For the film, they brought back the old awning and turned the facade into a regular hipster hangout from 1971.

It was strange to see all the extras standing around in their 70's garb, talking on cell phones and drinking Starbucks. 

Of course, the cars they brought in were all classic, but I really loved this old NYC taxi, waiting in front of the hotel.

You guys know Luna, right?  Beautiful and classic European (German) style for kids...

I so wish we could have brought you all to the Target Specacular event last night at The Standard Hotel, because these pictures do NOT do it any justice.  The truth is, it was a truly spectacular event that I won't try to describe - I found a few videos online here and here. 

Christiane and I oohed and awed with the entire block as Target took over The Standard Hotel with dancers/models in each window, an amazing light and choreography show all done to a very impressive music score. Everyone in attendance was stumped about how they could have possibly pulled such a huge production off. There's really no other way to put it - it was spectacular.

Our kids just LOVE the new stamp sets - trust me we have done a lot of trial and quality control here in the studio with all our little ones...they are hip and graphic and my favorite feature is the sliding top which allow me to pack everything up and store it away with no mess and no lost peices....don't you just get so upset when they ask for that super specific toy and you have no idea where it has gone?  It won't happen again! We just had to give you a little tip that (sadly) our long-time secret design resource in Dumbo Prague Kolektive is closing its doors. This is terribly sad for us, but can be great for you because literally everything is (at least) half off.  They specialize in mid-century and deco furniture and pendant lamps from former Czechoslovakia and have about 150 items to sell. Bingka and I had to go over to Dumbo ourselves to check it out and I walked away with the most beautiful shelving unit.

Yesterday Bingka was wearing the most perfect dress from the Spring 2010 A Detacher line...not only was the drape perfect  - it was the most exquisite shade of pink blush.  Bingka is in good company – I thought Jennifer Aniston looked fresh and very modern in her Donna Karan too...

I can’t stop thinking about it... I am feeling like pink blush is the new off-white for interiors.

Last night Christiane, her two adorable kiddies and I headed up the FDR to Spanish Harlem to attend the preview of the new (and first-ever!) Manhattan Target store. They did a truly bang-up job, bringing in the likes of Russel Simmons, Jerry & Jessica (Seinfeld, of course), Marcus Samuelson and many more...

It was full of local flair - Target brought in local musicians, food from neighboring restaurants, they invited many local business owners and their employees to come in, relax, eat and drink great food and explore.

The kids loved the mini cupcakes from Melba’s, while Christiane and I couldn’t get enough of the fried fish with spicy mayo...it was all delish!

Of course, we couldn’t leave without our Target goodies. Manhattanites – rejoice....Tarjay has arrived!

A few weeks ago I made a trip back west to visit family and friends I made a pit stop in Portland for a friend's wedding. While there I stayed at the stunning hotel The Nines. The hotel is located in downtown Portland and consists of the top nine floors of the historic Meier & Frank Building. In 2008 the hotel opened after $137 million worth of renovations and boasts art by local artists, as well as sculptures and instillations throughout the hotel.

Needless to say I was very impressed by the uniqueness, elegance and design quality of The Nines. I will definitely be staying there the next time I am back in Portland!

As I was googling this morning I was happy to learn that today is our style icon Frida’s 103rd birthday and just like us ....Frida loved the birds.

It's a beautiful morning here in lovely old Halifax, on Canada's east coast where we've come to visit our daughter for the weekend. Its a holiday here - today is Canada Day. Never heard of it? Well that's the first thing about being Canadian - we aren't bothered by that. We like our celebrations, just like our country, flying under the radar a little bit, like a really good secret, rather than march them out to the world's attention with a big brass band. Today the Queen (that would be our Monarch, the British Queen Elizabeth II) is in Ottawa inspecting the tulips (there are many - the Dutch just kept on sending them to us after the War), tonight a crowd will assemble for a free concert on Parliament hill that gets broadcast on the CBC, our national broadcast network, and in between we won't be doing a hell of a lot rather than making sure we've got enough BBQ briquettes, stopping in at Tim's for a coffee and a cruller, and reading the paper on the dock, maybe going for a swim.

One of the best things about being Canadian is that Canadians are funny. Wedged as we are between Europe and America we have some ironic distance from both. Did you know Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Lorne Michaels and Dan Akroyd are Canadian? Yup. We are funny.

Gorgeously multi-cultural (we take our global fusion seriously here, I mean it's a government policy), our professional lovelies include Yasmina Warshame, Shalom Harlowe and the superest supermodel of them all, Linda Evangelista. Did you know, we have diamonds too? Yes, really gorgeous white pure ones, from the far north and they don't have anything to do with fueling military military regimes and financing civil war.

The other thing we have going for us is this land. Space, air, trees, rivers, beaches, mountains, you name it - we got it and it infuses everything about the way we live here, from the good (best skiing in the world at Whistler, most amazing cottage country and culture) to the not so good (we don't think twice about driving our cars and expanding our enormous carbon footprint).

The most stylish Canadian moments, I would have to say, would have to be the era of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, himself the most swish leader the world has seen in many decades with his rose in his lapel, his vintage Mercedes cabriolet, dressed in full buckskin for a canoe trip down the Nahanni, or dancing in a 70's tux with his hippie bride Margaret at Studio 54. And then he had the 'tude-flipping the press a "fuddle duddle," smokin a cigar with Castro, dancing a pirouette behind the Queen. This guy was an intellectual, a savvy politician and a sexy man of his age with style to burn.

Neil Young

Neil Young is another great key to good Canadian style - raw, personal, deeply honest, solitary, non-pompous to the extreme, his personal style statement of flannel shirts and denim, construction boots and unkempt hair got called "grunge" later when it was mimiced by Kurt Cobain and then put on the fashion runway by Marc Jacobs. But we know it's ours, just like all singer songwriters with a guitar these days singing with their quirky imitations of Neil and Joni Mitchell. They are just trying to sound and look Canadian. You can't fool us, but we won't bother to correct you, because its really not polite.

Montreal

Our cities too are incredibly stylish-sorry but Montreal is one of those magical places that lives in the imagination, sexy, sophisticated small, and totally cosmopolitan. And St John's Newfoundland? That place rocks out entirely to its own drummer.

Ultimately, the best thing about being Canadian is a shared sense that people are so greatful to have left whatever hellhole of war and struggle and privation behind them and come to this land of lakes and space and endless peaceful possibility for themselves and their children that the overwhelming sense one gets on the street here particularly in a multicultural city like Toronto, where we live, is one of deep gratitude that such a place exists here on earth.

And what do we have on our flag? No predatory animals or military stripes. We have a leaf, a maple leaf to be precise, that has wafted down off a giant tree and is swaying in the breeze, hopefully to the sounds of really great new Canadian music, Feist, Sam Roberts or Arcade fire.

We have made a very quiet Canadian promise to each other here, that if we are tolerant and respectful of one another, maybe the rest of the globe will take a lesson from us and start doing it too and the world will become a better happier safer and more humane place.

And I can't imagine any other, better promise.

1. My Costalots Sunglasses - retro-chic and made with industrial grade lenses so they can get battered around in my big bag with no major harm.  I got them at a great boutique chain here in the city called In God We Trust but you can find a retailer near you on their website.

2. Laura Mercier HydraTint - this stuff is pure genius. It looks like chapstick so you don't feel silly applying anywhere; it has SPF 15 and it's the perfect shade of 20's-pin-up-girl red. They have other colors, but this coral-red Crimson color is perfect for summer.

3. Something to Tell You by Hanif Kureishi - the lovely P recommended this book on her blog way back in December. Finally getting around to that star in my Google Reader, I am 2 chapters in and LOVING it. It's not all sunshine and roses, I'll warn you - but it's full of mystery, intrigue and amazing characters.

4. The Pandora app on my new iPhone 4 - specifically the Preservation Hall Jazz Band station.  As I walk around the city in the heat, the sound of New Orleans jazz somehow makes the steam coming off the streets and the summer crowds feel just right.

It is a hot summer day in NYC today- it feels like 100 degrees and is very muggy! I am dreaming about these cool-looking houses featured in Elle Decoration. There’s nothing like high ceilings and a wash of white over everything to make you feel immediately about 20 degrees cooler.

These huge angled windows are fantastic! I would love to hang out on the couch reading and drinking limeade until the sun goes down.

It seems that the more pregnant Jenna gets, the better her outfits.  Had to snap this quick shot as she walked in the door this morning - love a mini dress on a woman in her third trimester!

So when our son William woke us up at 5am this morning, ready for the day....stayed up just long enough to shake us out of sleep and promptly crashed on the sofa, surrounded by our pillows - I snapped this quick shot. It's cute to me now, at 10am, after a few cups of coffee and an early morning "nap" - but I will tell you it was not so cute at 5am.

I’m in the midst of preparing to spend my second 4th of July in one of my favorite places on earth- Amsterdam!

Each year we travel there for the Kleine Fabrik Children’s Trade Fair at the RAI. It is, by far, one of the best and most enjoyable shows to attend.

My awesome hosts (and distributors) Mark and Katja, sent me this photo of the cod fish Mark caught at the lake last week. I hope they’ve put it on ice so I can enjoy it with them! See you soon guys!

We've given you hints and peeks at this new collection...but I am beyond thrilled to finally announce our first offering of residential fabrics with Robert Allen.  We've been working with the amazing team at Robert Allen on the collection for a little over a year and I can tell you that every single fabric (and there are 72 of them in this first round) is designed and fabricated with a hip, luxe, modern home in mind. 

The first collection is called Eclectic Modern, and I think you'll see why. Since our professional imagery is not yet ready - here are a few glimpses of what the collection looks like...

 We love how this sofa turned out...it's our Vintage Blossom in gray.  So chic and classic at the same time.

This chair is upholstered in Gate.  Gate works on everything!

I love this grouping of chairs - you can see how all the fabrics and scales work together.  This collection is centered around the DwellStudio philosophy of mixing and matching.

We are also so excited to show our designs in wovens, velvets and textures.  It just another dimension for us.  I LOVE our classic dots in velvet pile.  Gorgeous....

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the NeoCon tradeshow in Chicago with Robert Allen, introducing our new collection of Health Care and Pediatric textiles. This is something I've wanted to do for a very long time - I feel so lucky to have found an amazing partner in Robert Allen that is making this collection a reality.

I thought I'd give you all a little sneak peek at what could be showing up at a hospital near you...

 We love the range - from graphic leaves to running zeebra.  We hope it cheers up the little kiddies at the hospital.

Back in March, while traveling through Australia, I was introduced to an amusement park called LUNA PARK in both Melbourne and Sydney. Come to find out the original Luna Park was built right here in Coney Island, NY in 1903 - back when Coney Island was considered the 8th wonder of the world! This was home to original Tunnel of Love! Flash forward to 2010, Luna Park has just been re-opened in its birth place not to mention is now in over 40 countries worldwide!

It's Saturday night and you have nothing cute to wear?  Well, if you¹re here in Austin like me, you head instantly to Strut. Strut's many Austin locations have been an institution since I can remember, so imagine my excitement when owner Caroline Hernandez decided to open a new Baby store...enter gaga! Caroline has taken her marvelous grown-up style and translated it into a store that mom, dad, and baby can love! Yesterday I got a full tour of the store and found myself oohing and aahing at everything she showed me.  Take a look at the pictures below, but I mean, tons of yellow lanterns hanging from the ceiling?! Even I said, "Ohhhh balloons!"...

Also a treat, I got to help Caroline pick out some of our new bedding patterns for her master bedroom.  Here is a sneak peak of her color scheme, but stay tuned for "How You Dwell - Caroline Hernandez style."

I can't really believe that I am writing this post...partly because I can't believe how quickly time slips by but also because I can't believe how long we have been at this. This month marks 10 years that I have been working with Jennifer Chused. 10 years ago on a June day  - Jenna moved her stuff into my tiny unheated Spring Street office to help out because she believed in DwellStudio. I could not pay her so she continued her freelance work from the office too. By all accounts Jenna and I are opposites - she is tall, dark and southern and I am -well -short, blonde and northern - like really northern. Our personalities follow suit - Jenna is calm, calculating and linear and I am crazy, disorganized and very non-linear. I could not have done all of this with out a lot of people but Jenna tops that list. I think that anyone who works at DwellStudio or anyone that ever has would agree that we could all use a little of what Jenna delivers - passion, uncompromising standards and laser focused style.

My husband, toddler and I are traveling this week on a multi-stop wedding bonanza. And I had to share my new-found love and respect for our Sullivan Messenger diaper bag...it has literally been my lifesaver this trip. The various pockets and compartments keep us completely organized as we shuffle from airport to airport and event to event. And MOST importantly: my husband carries it the entire time because it actually LOOKS cool. So I have free hands to chase the 2 year old and sip champagne.

I discovered that his water bottle snaps perfectly on to the stroller attachment. More room inside!

As many of you have noticed by now, our partnership with Robert Allen was announced by the lovely Sabine Rothman at Traditional Home. We are thrilled about the collection and CAN’T WAIT to share it with you...stay tuned for more.

Broken Embraces

Aside from sunning it up in the park and at the beach this weekend I made some time to watch Pedro Almodόvar’s film “Broken Embraces”. The movie, as all of his movies are, was a visual masterpiece full of color, pattern and texture. It was as if each location was built by one of my favorite architect's Luis Barragán. 4 STARS in my book!

As all of us bounced off to our various destinations for the long weekend, some had better luck than others getting to said destination. Poor Heidi and her family were on their way to Upstate New York when the thing that every family with three kids in the back seat does not want to happen happened: the inevitable flat tire. Luckily, all was well in the end and a very kind tow truck driver helped them out...but it has us all thinking about what we would do. I am the first to admit that, although my dad taught me how to change a tire when I got my first car...the minute I got one last summer I made no attempt to change it myself - I hopped right on the phone and called Triple A. So - our question is: How many of you know how to change a tire? We really want to know...

I was at my super-hip sister-in-law Karen VonHahn’s home this weekend. She gave me her copy of the new magazine Gentlewoman from the same people who publish “Fantastic Man”. The first issue has the subtitle “Modernist”, what could be better for us Dwellers? J’adore...everything from the graphics, font choice and layout to the great photography. I love spread entitled wardrobe....where there are just photos of the details of the clothing. Amazing! Clothing for clothing’s sake. The knots hair spread is divine too...I am subscribing as we speak.

Also there is a centre section on uncoated stock (the rest of the magazine is printed on high gloss) that features a series of ‘references’ – footnotes – to the magazine content. There are explanations of various details in the writing, the entire issue’s sidebars in one serving - love love!
