Q: How do you define your Style?
A: Our house is an old farm house so it dictates a casual country style of its own. I have a lot of antiques that have been passed down to me by my family that I mix in with art and objects from my friends and favorite designers. I like things comfortable so there are a lot of cozy places to sit and lay down. There is a bit of the Cabinet of Curiosity going on here as well.

Q: Who is your favorite designer? 
A : I make housewares so I tend to like others that do the same. I like John Derian, Diana Fayt Patch NY, Klein Reid, Douglas Little… the list is very long.

Q: What’s your favorite piece of clothing?
A: A t-shirt and jeans with a cashmere sweater.

Q:  Idea of the perfect family vacation?
A:  We went to St Thomas for Christmas last year.  All we had to do was get up, walk to breakfast and snorkel all day. Perfect.

Q:  Number one tip for new moms/dads?
A: I have no advice but to trust you own instincts. You know your child best.

Q: Most embarrassing fashion era?
A: Has to be big hair 80s.  My hair tends to get big no matter what I do, and I had a “layered look” in the early 80s  you can really only imagine it.

Q:  What are the top 3 things that happen in your world every day?
A:  Working in the studio, asking “what should we have for dinner?” and I love you.

Q: What’s one thing you could never live without?
A: Hugs from my husband and son.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to visit?
A: My family has a house on a Lake.  It is always my favorite place to go.

Q:  Your favorite kids’ book?
A: Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems. When my son was first starting to read he memorized every word and could act it out.  He totally related to that pigeon’s frustrations.

Q:  If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A:  Cracked Pepper Kettle Chips.

Q:  What was the last song played on your ipod?
A: The sound track to the Woody Allen movie Vicki Christina Barcelona.

 
Q:  What’s your hometown’s best kept secret?
A: Strolling of the Heifers, a cow parade in June.

Q:  Your favorite neighborhood haunt?
A: We just bought a turntable so we can spend a lot of time at our local record store “In the Moment” in Brattleboro. 

Q:  How do you decompress?
A:  Porch, wine, food, friends.

Q:  What do you think is the best gift to get? To give?
A: The best gift to get is other people’s time. My friend Sharon just came over with a homemade bowl of grits and shrimp, for no reason. That was amazing! I like to give people perennials to plant in their yard, the gift that keeps on giving.

Q:  Tell us about your favorite room, or piece of furniture?
A: Our back porch is amazing in every season.  I love the kitchen table that my husband made for me out of the wood from an old shed we had to tear down.

Q: How do you define your Style?
A: I tend to gravitate towards earthy and minimal things with an occasional quirky vintage textile or interesting pattern here and there. This generally applies to my taste in fashion and the things I surround myself with in my home.

Q: Who is your favorite designer?
A: Eva Zeisel, Rachel Comey, Mina Perhonen.

Q: Most embarrassing fashion era?
A: The 80s. But it’s also the most nostalgic: feathered bangs, jelly shoes and pegged jeans, oh my!

Q: What’s one thing you could never live without?
A: My camera and stacks of books.

Q: Tell us about your favorite room, or piece of furniture? 
A: I have an old teak hand-me-down sideboard with sliding doors that my parents were getting rid of. I may never be able to part with it.

Q: Fill in the blank- “I never miss a ______ !”
A: A chance to travel. I just returned from an incredible visit to Greece and Turkey, and a trip to Thailand is on the horizon.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to visit?
A: In NYC, I love the peacefulness of the Temple of Dendur at the Met. I could sit in that space for hours.

Q: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: A slice of Best Pizza’s white pizza with caramelized onions and sesame seeds.

Q: What was the last song played on your iPod?
A: Fleetwood Mac’s Albatross. It’s a beautiful and slightly haunting instrumental.

Q: What’s your hometown’s best kept secret?
A: I don’t think there are any secrets left in Brooklyn.

In honor of Father's Day we chose to feature a very cool dad this week on Dwelling With... My good friend Daniel Lehmann is just that! In addition to being super dad to two adorable children, Jacob, 5 and Sophia, 3, he is also the founder of the awesome new company reCrib, a site where you can buy and sell used baby gear. I'm so excited that Daniel took a few minutes out of his busy schedule for this interview! 

Q: How do you define your Style?  
A: Ultra casual. Comfort is key, I like my jeans and t-shirts. 

Q: Who is your favorite designer?   
A: Probably Steven Alan.  My closet is filled with Steven Alan shirts.

Q: What was your most embarrassing fashion era? 
A: My wife would say faded jeans and golf shirts. That was what I wore on our first date, so I guess it couldn’t have been that bad – unless she saw me as a project.

Q: What’s your silliest nickname for your kid? Theirs for you? 
A: When Sophia was born, Jake couldn’t pronounce her name, so he called her More Pizza.  That has stuck – I call her More Pizza from time to time.  My kids don’t really have any nicknames for me – at least none that they’ve shared with me.

Q: Fill in the blank- “I never miss a_______!” 
A: Morning cup of coffee! I’m a coffee snob and order espresso beans from roasters all over the country.  So much fun to try them all.  Currently, I’m making my way through a bag of Ritual out of San Francisco.

Q: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? 
A: Pizza.  Di Fara Pizza on Avenue J in Brooklyn, to be exact.

Q: What was the last song played on your ipod?  
A: Please don’t ask that question.  Katy Perry, California Girls – but my kids chose it for our nightly after dinner dance party.

Q: What’s your favorite kids’ book? 
A: Curious George

Q: What’s your hometown’s best kept secret?  
A: I’m a born and bred New Yorker. And guess what - the people are actually really nice.  Not sure why we get a bad rap. 

Q: Your favorite neighborhood haunt? 
A: Kaffe 1668 in Tribeca. Great coffee and really good sandwiches too. 

Q: What’s your idea of the perfect family vacation? 
A: No doubt, a Caribbean beach vacation in February.

Q: Favorite kids game? 
A: Every morning after breakfast we play Nerf baseball in our living room.  We make sure the chandelier stops swaying before Mommy gets up.

Q: Must read blogs? 
A: The DwellStudio blog, of course, Apartment Therapy, and Design*Sponge.  I also read a lot of the tech blogs, such as Mashable, Venture Beat, and Tech Crunch. 

Q: What do you think is the best gift to get? 
A: This year, my kids got me a Yankees t-shirt, sweatshirt, and mug for my birthday.  I was pretty psyched.  

Q: The best gift to give? 
A: I’m in the process of planning a getaway to Europe for my wife’s 40th.  It doesn’t get better than a trip!

Q: Do you have a favorite DwellStudio Pattern?
A: Hands down, Transportation!

She's the an award-winning designer known for creating the jackets for books by Roberto Bolaño, Lydia Davis, and Jonathan Franzen, among many others. She is also the Art Editor and designer of The Paris Review, and the new mother of 6 month old twin boys. And somehow she found the time to give us this little Q & A!

Q: Who is your favorite designer?

A: I don't own anything by her yet, but I love Rachel Comey's clothing line. The pieces and fabrications are little works of art. I'm coveting her plaid print "Ply" dress with simple cap sleeves and beautifully draped bodice from her Spring collection. I'm too afraid to actually try it on. I don't want the love affair to go any further, or my wallet will be in trouble. Ours is destined to be a long distance affair. Sigh...

Q: What’s your favorite piece of clothing?

A: The cardigan, hands down. It's the perfect clothing item. It keeps you warm, without making you feel too bundled up. It allows for accent colors, textures, and patterns. It always looks relaxed even when it's the finishing piece, and unlike it's cousin, the jacket, it doesn't mind being stuffed in your bag when you're on the run.

Q: Fill in the blank- “I never miss a ______ !”

A: A meal! My husband can get very busy and go all day without eating. I'd be flat on my face by 10am if I missed breakfast, and an additional pre-lunch 11 o'clock snack is good too.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to visit?

A: My brother and sister-in-law's gorgeous home in LA. They have a pool that faces their back garden and beyond that a tremendous mountain rises up, completely untouched by developers. Being there at dusk, in their company, when the city is just beginning to light up down below, is all quite magical.

Q: What’s your go-to drink order?

A: For their calming effects, green or chamomile tea, but I'd never turn away a sparkling glass of Prosecco.

Q: Your favorite neighborhood haunt?

A: The last three Fridays in a row I've found myself in line at Bakeri on Wythe between N. 7th and 8th streets. The waitstaff all wear Rosie the Riveter jumpsuits and headscarfs. When you go, I hope they are serving their banana and chocolate bread pudding. The back garden, though not easily accessible with a double stroller, is a little slice of Williamsburg-heaven. Being there really does make you feel like you've tripped through the looking glass and found yourself in Europe.

Q: Must read blogs?

A: I'm really inconsistent about keeping up with blogs, but when I'm being conscientious here are a few places I'll go: The Paris Review, Design Sponge, The Casual Optmist, Faceout Books, From The Desk Of, the personal blog of fellow book jacket designer and gurus, John Gall and Henry Yee, and the blog of my London based, artist brother, Simon Neville. I'm also excited to read what my niece and her fiancé are up to at www.fairfolksandagoat.com. Oh, and from now on The Studio Blog, too.

Q: What do you think is the best gift to get? To give?

A: Without hesitation—fresh flowers. The less fussy, the better.

Q: Tell us about your favorite room, or piece of furniture?

A: I guess it would have to be our Hans Olsen dinning room table and three-legged chair set. The chairs have rounded backs and were designed to fit neatly into the edges to the table. They disappear under it when tucked in. It's perfect for apartment dwellers. Unfortunately the chairs are terrible for little kids (and also some wobbly adults), so we're considering preserving it by putting it into storage for a while.

Q: Do you have a favorite DwellStudio Pattern?

A: Since the arrival of our new, wee roommates, I'd have to say the "Owl" pattern. It reminds me of the Marimekko prints of my own childhood.

Not long ago Chantale shared her lovely DIY lampshade on her blog. We were drooling over the the gorgeous use of our Vintage Blossom Fabric in Citrine.

When I started writing the proposal for Undecorate I had a few houses in mind.  One of them was the home of my uber-cool sister-in-law Karen von Hahn. I know that others impact our style and Karen has had a serious influence on me.  She defines "personal style" with her clever use of vintage mixed with design icons and a dash of whimsy. Karen has one of the best collections of signs-as-decor I have ever seen.  She also has every DwellStudio pattern and they all look great at her gorgeous house. Between her duties as Author, Writer, Journalist and Style Czar for The Toronto Star, Blogger, Editor of the King West Magazine, Super Chef and Super Mom - Karen squeezed in this Q&A. Here it is...

Q: How do you define your Style? 

A: I don't really like to try to define my style because it's a constantly changing, fluid thing. It's a cumulative result of all of the places I have been, all the people I have met and read about and been influenced by, and all the sights and impressions I have gathered along the way. If it has to be described in a phrase or nutshell, I would have to say my style is evolving and highly personal.

Q: Who is your favorite designer? 

A: I love the work of so many designers, from fashion visionaries like Yves Saint Laurent and Dries van Noten to textile geniuses such as Josef Frank and Mariano Fortuny to geniuses like David Hicks, Elsie de Wolfe and Billy Haines--I guess I don't have a lot of living design heroes!

Q: What’s your favorite piece of clothing? 

A: I have a vintage stretch wool Gucci shirt from the 70s that is just killer always. Or maybe my Japanese peacoat?

Q: Most embarrassing fashion era? 

A: Eighties. Hands down the ugliest era, from neon brights to Dynasty pouf dresses.

Q: What’s one thing you could never live without?

A: Hot sauce--and print newspapers.

Q: Fill in the blank- “I never miss a ______ !”

A: Chance to learn, or see something new!

Q: Where’s your favorite place to visit? 

A: Anywhere I haven't been yet. But New York, Rome and Jamaica are up there on my list.

Q:  What’s your go-to drink order?

A: Lately, Bulleit bourbon on the rocks with fresh squeezed limes.

Q: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? 

A: Tomatoes--really great perfectly ripe ones with kosher salt.

Q: What was the last song played on your ipod?

A: Talking Heads' "This Must be the Place". I'm back into Talking Heads lately and this is the best love song ever.

Q:   What’s your hometown’s best kept secret? 

A: That it might be the coolest place in the world to live.

Q:  Your favorite neighborhood haunt? 

A: Kensington market.

This is the perfect week to feature one of the most brilliant people I know in our Dwelling With column...because it is the week Undecorate is launched. Rumaan helped me write the book.  He’s an amazing dad, style-guru and all around great person.  

Q: How do you define your Style? 

A: I think style is one of those ever-evolving things. I wouldn't trust someone with the same political opinions at 30 that they held at 15; likewise, I expect style to evolve as life does. So currently, I guess my style would be "dad". You know - snot on my shirt (my shoulder being an excellent place to wipe one's nose) and crumbs on the floor. 

Q:  Who is your favorite designer? 

A: I love different designers for different things. For shirts, Shipley & Halmos. For jeans, Uniqlo. For eyeglasses, Robert Marc. For ties, Band of Outsiders. For socks, J.Crew. For bedding, DwellStudio (obviously!). 

Q:  What’s one thing you could never live without? 

A:  Naps. Not for me, for the kid. He's a three-hour power-napper, and a lot of business gets done around here between 12 and 3.

Q: What are the top 3 things that happen in your world every day? 

A: Life with kids is at once repetitive and full of surprises. I can always count on my son asking for blueberries, requesting a song, and trying desperately to get to my computer, which he isn't allowed to touch. 

Q: What’s your go-to drink order?

A: Jameson on the rocks.

Q: What’s  your favorite neighborhood haunt? 

A: Well, there aren't many haunts to speak of in Prospect Lefferts Gardens (attention restauranteurs!) so locally we spend the majority of our time in Prospect Park or the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Q:   How do you decompress? 

A: I can't fall asleep unless I've read something, even a few pages. Right now, I'm reading Kazuo Ishiguro's The Unconsoled, which is startling and beautiful.

Q:  What’s  your favorite kids’ book?

A: In this household, I'm known for my dramatic interpretation of Caps for Sale.

Q:  Must read blogs? 

A: I love Partners & Spade's blog, I think 2thewalls.com is very smart, I think themillions.com is a reliably good read, I like looking at nickhaus.com, and love Arts and Letters Daily. If I'm really being a slacker, I'll look at Gawker (especially anything by Richard Lawson, who I think is some kind of genius) or dlisted.com and laugh until I'm crying.

Q:  What’s your silliest nickname for your kid? 

A: Our son was an incredibly serious baby. For a long time, it was very hard to get a smile out of him, so we called him Professor. 

Q:  Tell us about your favorite room, or piece of furniture? 

A: My favorite room in my house is the dining room. It's an uncommon luxury in New York to have a dining room, and ours is bizarrely big. I love having sit down dinners with friends, though most of the time the dining room is just a fun open space for our son to play in. It's where he parks his bike.

Q: What’s your idea of the perfect family vacation? 

A: The beach. I'll take any beach. In fact, I'd like to go to the beach right now.

Q:  Do you have a favorite DwellStudio Pattern? 

A: I love the Draper Stripe. It's bold but not overpowering - it just feels very classic to me. And the Draper Stripe duvet is ridiculously soft.

Q: How do you define your Style?

A: Honestly, I've stopped trying. If I lived in a tiny place all by myself, I'd fill it with art and furniture and details that make my heart sing. In real life, I share a house with a man who has very different taste than mine, a dog who sheds like it's her personal contribution to goodness in the world, and a baby – babies come with a lot of stuff!

Q: What was your most embarrassing fashion era?

A: Need I mention the pink parachute pants I wore in Grade 3? 

Q: What are the top 3 things that happen in your world every day?

A:  By "top 3" I mean "they happen every day": I get spit-up on, I delight in smiles and I try to explain one thing about the world.

Q: Fill in the blank- “I never miss a ______ !”

A: Chance to knit or crochet while watching a Joss Whedon television show or movie.

Q: Your favorite kids’ book?

A: Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak

Q: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A: Cold breakfast cereal, of the not-candy variety.

Q: How do you decompress?

A: I make stuff and I read. Right now I'm trying to spend at least half an hour each day crocheting my son a vest (from a pattern in Baby Blueprint Crochet, by Robyn Chachula), and I'm reading The Passage, by Justin Cronin.

Q: Tell us about your favorite room, or piece of furniture...

A: My favourite room is our living room, and my favourite piece of furniture in it is the wee table my partner and I made out of an old door. I love this room for its fabulous light, our photographs of friends and family, and the art we've hung. It's comfortable and it looks good, and if I could I'd spend all day every day in it.

Q: What’s your number one tip for new moms?

A: Don't buy into the hype, ignore unsolicited advice. Take each day as it comes, some will be great, some won't be – all is to be expected.

Q: A must have product for parents?

A: A Pilates ball. Babies love the bouncing, even when they're freaking out.

Q: What are your must-read blogs? 

A: CRAFT, Poppytalk, Modish, Craftypod 

Q: Do you have a favorite DwellStudio Pattern? 

A: Transportation. I kind of have a problem, I love it so much.

What is your idea of the perfect party?

A reality tale of two Manhattanites turned country curators Josh, a New York Times best selling author, and his partner Brent, former VP of Healthy Living for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, take us along for the ride as they trade the city for the country and learn the ropes of keeping a farm and building a business.

As I lay on my couch fighting the jet lag and catching up with the B-Boys (I swear their relationship is a mirrored image of my own) my heart jumped when I saw a shot of our Chinoiserie bedding in their beautiful master suite!

It has a bit of a nature theme with companion prints by Claire Nereim and a fancy limited edition print of John James Audubon's American Flamingo. Also the unhung painting is by me. I originally bought a terrarium for my friend for her birthday and then was so jealous of hers that I got one for myself. ha! We both have trouble keeping anything alive in them for too long (fingers-crossed this plant will beat the record). I have a very large glove mold collection, around 25 of them. They are mostly on a shelf in the living room but these two are cool and textured and from Argentina so I keep those out to display."

I was so thrilled when one of my Twitter friends, @ChantaleP, sent over pics from her blog of her beautiful daughter Keira lounging with her new Gio Lemon hooded towel, puchased at one of our favorite Montreal retailers, Le Baldaquin. In our daily blog trolling, we ran across this great post on Desire to Inspire about photographer David Meredith.  Lo and behold, we found a photo of our Chinoiserie for Anthropologie bedding in one of his photographs.  We don't know who lives in this bedroom, David, but we love how they dwell!

We joke that my mom Ruth should be an honorary DwellStudio employee because I am always getting helpful emails on a range of topics - from store owner feedback, to pointing out our products in magazines, to stock levels at Target, or sometimes even typos on our blog (oops!).

The other day I was talking to her and she said, "I'm not cool, I don't really mix the squares with the stripes, etc. I just like it all to match." She titled this image "It all works!"

I had the distinctly wonderful opportunity to meet Valorie Hart in New Orleans - which has become my new spiritual home. As it turns out, for good reason: some of my family members made their way there from Quebec in 1755 after they were deported from Canada for refusing to take an oath to the King of England.  I found this out after my trip in August.  I was perplexed as to why my last name was turning up everywhere...including some interesting places (this establishment is right on Chartres Street in the middle of the Quarter). In a sense I was coming home - I loved it so much I seriously contemplated buying the double shotgun house for sale across the street from Valorie in the Irish Channel...  

The food, the people, the pace...everything is fabulous and French meets American with a dash of Voodoo – which is a pretty powerful combination. I never got to visit this great city before the storm – a moment by which all time in New Orleans is now measured but I can’t imagine anything better. I know that Valorie was a big part of my love of the city – this lady is funny, tough, talented, takes no crap and boy can she and Alberto dance– a combination as powerful as the city she lives in.

Oh and by the way...Val – I LOVE HOW YOU DWELL.

I hardly ever get to peek into the homes of the people who work for me – who can blame them? At the end of the day the last person you want over is the boss.
