The story behind our new Deco Floral Bedding pattern: Our lead textile designer returned from a trip to the Cooper Hewett Museum last year raving about the Sonia Delaunay exhibition—Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay.

It was Delaunay’s approach to art that really made our designer swoon— combining color and buoyant brush strokes to produce movement and rhythm. Delaunay was a visual virtuoso of sorts; she dabbled in everything from conceptual painting to fashion design. After researching popular prints from the Art Deco era and studying Delaunay’s abstract concepts, the design team honed in on the chic and trendy rose motif from 1930s Paris. Our designers made this retro print new again with jaunty spirals and a brassy palette of bronze and lavender that references Delaunay's Avant Garde sensibility—bold, undulating and graphic.

Head to the Union Square Green Market to stock up on branches and blooms— magnolias, tulips, lavender… It’s a great way to bring a little spring into your home. I look for magnolia branches that still have lots of little buds. Watching those pale pink flowers slowly blossom is a spring-time ritual I love—this set was 12 bucks!

We delved into our design files to find these early sketches of the Axel Round Dining Table. We discovered that our design team initially envisioned a rectangular table, but eventually decided on the round shape of the Axel for its versatility. A round table feels so casual and has an unfussy vibe—doesn't it make you want to gather around for cozy dinners? But with its rosewood finish and gilded base, the Axel can be easily styled for a sophisticated dinner party. Casual or elegant, the Axel combines the best of both worlds! One of the most important relationships we've fostered over the years is with photographer Melanie Acevedo. In addition to shooting several of our catalogs, Melanie captured the stunning moments and interiors you see on the pages of Undecorate. Working with a photographer can be a challenge. It's important to craft an open and collaborative relationship, and that's just what we get with Melanie! She totally gets our aesthetic and stimulates us to see our projects in new and interesting ways—the ultimate creative combo!

We're loving Melanie's new photoblog 52 Weeks! Starring her family—husband Richard, daughter Violet and son Rockwell—Melanie captures all the stunning moments in her life. From finger painting to bath time to cross-country trips, 52 Weeks is a strikingly honest peek into the everyday life of this true creative soul. And a perfect example of the Undecorated life!

Melanie we love seeing the world through your lens!
