When choosing a rug, it is important to first consider the size that will best fit your space. A few things to keep in mind –
The rug should be big enough so that at least the two front legs of the furniture are on the rug. Large sofas or chairs placed near the edge of a room look just fine half on, half off the rug. The only exception is in the dining room where the table and chairs should all fit on the rug when the chairs are pulled out.
Leave a border of twelve to sixteen inches between the rug and the walls. With rugs bigger is better – a rug that is too small will look awkward and can make the space feel smaller than it actually is.
Keep walkways in mind. They should either be completely covered or not at all.
The best-kept interior design secret around: a cowhide rug never fails to give any room a subtly luxe-but-lived-in feel.
